Re-Creation of U.S. National Park Service Map
I created this map as my final project in my cartography course. The assignment was to completely re-create a U.S. National Park Service map of our choosing starting with a DEM layer downloaded from USGS Earth Explorer. I first created the background hillshade layer and did my best to mimic the colors used in the original NPS map for the interior of the park and the surrounding terrain. Then came the lengthy process of adding all necessary features to the map. Some elements came directly from geospatial data I was able to download from the National Park Service, while many others needed to be manually digitized or adjusted to fit into the map. After all of the geographic features were properly placed on the map, I exported my ArcGIS project as an svg which I was then able to import into Inkscape. Inkscape is a free vector graphics editor that gave me a high level of flexibility when placing labels, adding precise text, and creating a complex legend.
I also developed a website to showcase this map using Google Sites, which can be viewed here.
